A young boy in a blue hoodie raises his hand in a classroom setting. We are excited to welcome you to the Mequon-Thiensville School District! Our district serves students in grades 4K-12 in the communities of Mequon and Thiensville, north shore suburbs of Milwaukee that embrace world-class learning opportunities with rich arts, athletic and extracurricular opportunities for students.

The following information provide answers to frequently asked questions regarding enrolling in MTSD. If you have any additional questions, please contact the office of student services at 262-238-8510 or register@mtsd.k12.wi.us.

Steps to Enroll a New Student at MTSD

  • All families, including those that already have children enrolled in the district, are required to verify residency when enrolling a new child.

Children who are residents of Mequon or Thiensville are entitled to attend the Mequon-Thiensville schools. In order for us to do the best job possible, it is important that we verify student residency. This page explains how you can establish, for our records, that your child is a resident of the City of Mequon or Village of Thiensville. Proof of residency will be required prior to registration in our district.

If you are a resident of Mequon or Thiensville and your child lives with you, the following documents can be used to establish your child’s residency. Students who qualify for admission to District schools, per Board Policy 5111, will be accepted when the following documents have been submitted:

    1. An original birth certificate or passport;
    2. Proof of residency consisting of: a property tax bill, a current signed rental agreement, or a closing statement.
      • For Home Owners:
        • Closing Statement OR Mortgage Statement OR Property Tax Bill; AND
        • Utility Bill within the last 30 days or insurance statement
      • For Renters:
    3. An Immunization Record; and
    4. If applicable, court orders, legal custody documentation, and/or placement papers.

If you cannot furnish any of these documents because you live with a resident of Mequon or Thiensville, other documents to establish your child’s residence will be required.

If you have any questions about this required information, our processes or the intent of this information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

4K & 5K Program Information

  • We offer a tuition-free, half-day kindergarten for four-year-olds, five days per week at our three elementary schools—Donges Bay, Oriole Lane, and Wilson—as well as one morning section with community partner Range Line Preschool and Childcare. Classes run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-11:45 a.m. (morning session) or 1:15-4 p.m. (afternoon session).

Morning and Afternoon Placements & Lotter

Families indicate their morning or afternoon program preference during pre-registration. Student placements in morning or afternoon sections will be made according to family preference whenever possible. We retain the right to make final decisions on placements.

If more families indicate a preference for a morning or afternoon section than we have available seats, we will enact a formal lottery system, which is the most equitable approach to situations in which capacity is limited. Registrations received after May 1st will not be included in the lottery.

Families may still enroll at any time after the May 1 pre-registration deadline, however, those families will not participate in the class preference lottery.

  • Children in MTSD's 5-year-old kindergarten program (5K) experience a high-quality early-learning program that enhances our young learners' early understanding of literacy, numeracy and social-emotional learning. Passionate and dedicated teachers nurture children's innate curiosity as they prepare students for a promising future.

MTSD's 5K is a full-day program; children must be at least five-years-old on or before September 1 of that school year in order to enroll.

  • There is no better way to get a sense of a school, its culture and learning environment than by visiting. We invite prospective families to visit their child's home school meet staff members, take a tour, and ask any questions. Please contact the school directly to arrange a visit at a convenient time.

Open Enrollment for Non-Residents

  • The Mequon-Thiensville School District participates in the Wisconsin Interdistrict Open Enrollment Program, which allows parents to apply for their children to attend school districts other than the one in which they reside. Wisconsin residents in K4 through Grade 12 may apply to participate in the Open Enrollment program. Parents must submit an application form to nonresident school districts during a window of time that generally begins with the first full week in February and runs through the last week in April. (Please visit the Department of Public Instruction website for exact dates and times.)

Each year the MTSD Board of Education meets to determine whether seats will be available and, if so, which grade levels will have openings. If there are more applicants than there are seats available, we engage in a computerized random selection process to determine accepted applicants.

    THE NON-RESIDENT, OPEN ENROLLMENT
    APPLICATION WINDOW  FOR THE
2026-27 SCHOOL YEAR IS CLOSED ON APRIL 30, 2026.

  • Each year the MTSD Board of Education meets to determine whether seats will be available and, if so, which grade levels will have openings. If there are more applicants than there are seats available, we engage in a computerized random selection process to determine accepted applicants. Seat selection is not based on academic performance or extra-curricular activities. There is a preference given in the lottery for students that already have siblings in the district.

Even if there are no seats available in your grade, you are encouraged to apply and be put on a wait list. There is a possibility that additional seats may be allocated later in the summer. If seats become available, we will notify those families on the waitlist.

Applications are no longer being accepted for the 26-27 school year. For the 26-27 school year, the district set the following open enrollment seats:

    • 2 seats in Grade 5
    • 1 seat in Grade 4
    • 0 seats in special education
    • 0 seats in the speech/language program
  • For Open Enrollment information, application and deadlines, please visit the Department of Public Instruction website. The applications are open from the first Monday in February through the last Friday in April at 4:00 pm

The Mequon-Thiensville School District coordinates the selection process for students through the use of a computerized program. Students are randomly selected into the Open Enrollment program.
